2023 THRIVE Update: Basketball and Values
The second half of the THRIVE program consisted of an organized basketball practice and a values-based Bible lesson. In our basketball practices, we focused on fundamentals such as ball handling, passing, form shooting, and team defense. Youth of all basketball experience levels were encouraged to participate. Halfway through each practice, we would teach a Bible lesson that reinforced our core values of humility, empathy, and kindness. Practices were led by Coach George Yates, a previous AAU boys basketball national championship winner. Overall, these sessions allowed youth to not only improve their basketball skills, but also grow in their confidence and character. The two components of our program, “Wellness, Reading, Math” and “Basketball & Values”, combine to nourish our students’ social, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
2023 THRIVE Update: Wellness, Reading, and Math
Baltimore Children and Youth Fund has enabled us to start a wellness program called THRIVE that serves children in 5th and 6th grades. Twice weekly after school, the students receive wellness breaks and snacks, then engage in educational supports, then participate in basketball training and a faith based values lesson.
